"Saving Lives One Swab at a Time
by Lauren Watkins
November 20, 2006
Being
a lifesaver does not require skill or super human-qualities. Students
became lifesavers this week by simply walking in the Squires Student
Center and swabbing their cheeks.
On Tuesday and
Wednesday Lambda Phi Epsilon and Sigma Psi Zeta hosted a bone marrow
registration drive in the student center in which they specifically
targeted minority students.
“Out of the entire
National Marrow Donor Program, 30 percent represent minorities who are
registered,” said Cammy Lee of the Cammy Lee Leukemia Foundation. “But,
every year there are thousands of minorities that are diagnosted with
leukemia.”
After being diagnosted with a rare form of
leukemia 20 years ago, Cammy Lee and her family created the Cammy Lee
Leukemia Foundation. Lee, of Asian ethnicity, wanted to create a
program that would help her and other minorities find donors more
easily.
According to marrow.org, a person is in need of
a bone marrow transplant if they have been diagnosed with non-hodgkin’s
lymphoma, leukemia, myelodysplastic, or a variety of immune system or
genetic disorders. Those who experience these conditions face sever
vomiting, inability to walk, constant infections, bleeding and bruising
on a regular basis, and possibly death if not supplied with compatible
bone marrow.
According to Lee, most compatible marrow
donors are the siblings of the patient in need of a transplant, but
some times this is not the case.
“Probability of
finding a suitable donor, outside your immediate family, is 1 in 20,000
and even higher if you are a minority,” said Lee.
In
efforts to recruit minority students to register for the bone marrow
registration, Lambda Phi Epsilon and Sigma Psi Zeta adopted the bone
marrow drive as their annual philanthropy. Each of the Asian
organizations has their personal reasons for getting involved with the
program.
“This past year, we have one sister who has a
rare case of leukemia,” said Christina Ko a sister of Sigma Psi Zeta.
“So we adopted the Cammy Lee Foundation to help find a match for our
sister because if she doesn’t she will pass away.”
“One
of our brothers from Stanford University was diagnosed with leukemia.
He wrote a compelling letter to the national chapter to adopt the
program as our national philanthropy,” said Hubert Liu a brother of
Lambda Phi Epsilon. “Unfortunately he did not receive a donor and past
away.”
Lambda Psi Zeta and Sigma Psi Zeta hope to get more people involved in donating next year.
“The common misconception is people think that it’s going to hurt to
register,” said Ko. “All you have to do is come in and get your cheek
swabbed.”
